Histopathology and Mortality in Olive Flounder Infected by Scuticociliatosis caused by Philasterides dicentrarchi

چکیده
The histophagous scuticociliate, Philasterides dicentrarchi, infects Korean olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, cultured on Jeju Island in South Korea, causing significant economic losses. However, its route of entry is yet unknown. In the present study, we experimentally infected olive flounder by immersion or injection of different concentrations of P. dicentrarchi. Cumulative mortality was highest (95%) in the group of small fish exposed to 2 x 10 ciliates/ml. Ciliates were found in fins, the connective tissues of muscle, and nervous tissues. The major clinico-pathological manifestations were the appearance of bleached spots that coalesced to form brownish patches, hemorrhagic and severe dermal necrotic lesions. The major histopathological changes were degeneration of muscle fibers, necrosis of the hepatic parenchyma, severe edema of the intestinal wall, extensive fouling, necrotic degeneration, and hyperplasia in the gill bronchial epithelium. Many ciliates were ingested in the blood vessels, brain, dorsal fins, muscles, kidneys, and vertebra of infected flounder.

Occurrence of scuticociliatosis in olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus by Phiasterides dicentrarchi (Ciliophora: scuticociliatida).
In the course of identifying scuticociliates recently obtained from systemically infected olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea, we found a scuticociliate species whose small subunit ribosomal RNA (SS rRNA) gene was not amplified by species-specific primers previously designed for Uronema marinum and Pseudocohnilembus persalinus. By studying morphological characteristics of wet-mounted...
متن کاملAntiprotozoals effective in vitro against the scuticociliate fish pathogen Philasterides dicentrarchi.
The histophagous ciliate Philasterides dicentrarchi causes fatal scuticociliatosis in farmed turbot Scophthalmus maximus and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. The present study screened 52 candidate antiprotozoals for activity against this pathogen in vitro. Of these compounds, 14 were effective (i.e. killed all ciliates within a 24 h assay period). In descending order of efficacy (minimum lethal ...
متن کاملExperimental Scuticociliatosis in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) infected with Miamiensis avidus: pathological study on the possible neural routes of invasion and dissemination of the scuticociliate inside the fish body.
Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were experimentally infected with the highly pathogenic scuticociliate Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarachi) using the immersion method to clarify/identify the possible neural routes of entry and possible ways of dissemination of the scuticociliate in the fish body. Scuticociliates were observed on the skin and gills right from day 0-1 p...

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of replacing fish meal protein with fermented soybean meal (FSM) in diets on growth performance, feed utilization, morphological parameters, body composition, activities of antioxidant and digestive enzymes and also blood biochemistry of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Five isonitrogenic and isolipidic diets were prepare...
متن کاملPhylogenetic consideration of two scuticociliate genera, Philasterides and Boveria (Protozoa, Ciliophora) based on 18 S rRNA gene sequences.
Many scuticociliates are facultative parasites of aquatic organisms and are among the most problematic ciliate taxa regarding their systematic relationships. The main reason is that most species, especially taxa in the order Thigmotrichida have similar morphology and have not been studied yet using molecular methods. In the present work, two scuticociliate genera, represented by two rare parasi...
